Flair Focke Wulf FW190

This model started out as a Flair ARTF but as a scale modeller (to the best of my abilities, and with a little bit of modellers license!) I just had to alter it a little bit. The model as it comes is a glassfibre fuselage with foam wings, all pre-covered and painted...... well there was the first change as the two colours used were awful. I also wanted to fit air retracts, which meant repositioning and cutting out a bit more wing and also strengthening up the mountings. I had to make my own oleo's as I couldn't find any reasonably priced one's at the length I needed, I also made and fitted a "scale" retracting tail wheel . The model was originally powered by a Magnum XL120 four stroke, but this turned out to be insufficient for the power requirements of the airframe, it came out at 14lbs, a little bit overweight for the 120 so I fitted an MVVS 160 Petrol instead. To say it flies well is an understatement..... it is a peach, the extra weight seems to be an advantage as it's rock steady in the air and the 160 hauls it around no problem.

Another shot showing some of the detail and weathering. The model is based on the aircraft flown in 1944 by Oberstleutnant Joseph "Pips" Priller, aged 26, Commander of the JG 26 squadron  who was credited with 101 kills. He survived the war and died in 1961.
